Receive an overview of immigrant children and education globally,
Learn the basic sociological concepts and theories relevant to immigrants and education,
Learn educational policies, practices, issues, etc., about immigrants in several counties and areas.
Compare and contrast educational policies, practices, issues, etc., concerning immigrants in certain counties in a group research project.
Examples of topics for group research:
Integration policy, nationalism, citizenship, gender, social class, multicultural education, parental or educational strategy, language, acculturation, academic achievement, identity
Expected outcomes of this course:
Students will be expected to
Explain the current flow of immigrants, focusing on a few countries,
Explain the basic sociological concepts and theories relevant to immigrants and education,
Participate in and contribute to group work in a comparative study of the education of immigrants,
Present the outcomes of group research in class, and
Participate in and contribute to class discussions, comparing educational policies, practices, issues, etc., concerning immigrants in certain counties.
Please attend the guidance on the third week, if you are thinking of taking this course. Students will be expected to read the articles before each class, to take a few quizzes to review the contents discussed during class after each class.

Review Work(20%)
Students will be expected to take a few quizzes to review the contents discussed during class every week. Comments and questions will be welcomed.
Group Research Presentation (40%)
by Lecturer (15%), by TA (15%), by other groups (10%). Please refer to the attached rubric.
Essay (40%)
Each student will write an essay. Choose a topic relevant to the comparative study of the education of immigrants. Please refer to the attached rubric.
